Just when we thought libraries were a thing of the past, this magnificent structure shows up. Last September (2013), the 35,000 sq.m Library of Birmingham in the United Kingdom opened to the public. According to Yatzer, it is the largest library in Europe. The architecture and interior are out of this world, very intricately designed by Dutch designers Mecanoo Architects. The cost was estimated at around £188.8 million.
‘The library consists of an adult and children’s library, study center, music library, community health center, multimedia, archives, Shakespeare Memorial Room, offices, exhibition halls, cafes and lounge space, new shared auditorium (300 seats), neighboring Repertory Theatre and urban plan for Centenary Square. ‘

Like so many modern buildings it looks cold and inhuman. Or am I just being old-fashioned? The theater looks fit for robots and the whole edifice looks impermanent somehow. Not my favorite piece of architecture sadly. But there again as I said – I'm old fashioned.
